Geographical Indications

Three EU schemes known as PDO (protected designation of origin), PGI (protected geographical indication) and TSG (traditional specialty guaranteed) promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs.

Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)

This system covers a range of local and regional produce, including extra virgin olive oil. A specific geographical region can apply for PDO status for a particular product “unique” to that area. If granted the local growers association will then establish regulations that will usually cover the olive verities permitted, typically those traditional to the area, cultivation techniques, harvest periods and quality control. Growers within the designated area – who agree to be bound by the regulations – are permitted to add the special logo to the oil’s label, indicating that it is PDO oil. Such is a guarantee that the oil has been produced, processed AND produced within the specific region and thus acquire unique properties.

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)

It covers agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to the geographical area. At least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation takes place in the area.
